Love plays one of the most important roles for myself as a coach, and for all the players who want to get better. For me, I love and have always loved the game of basketball. This love is my motivation to coach, to teach, and to inspire. For players, you cannot get better at basketball and achieve your dreams unless you love this sport. If you don't love your teammates, practices, games, trainings, coaches, parents, workouts, and everything that comes with all of that, then you won't be able to get better or have any fun. Love the moments and enjoy the process!
As a coach, I have to be honest about what I know and don't know. I have to recognize my strengths and weaknesses so that I can continue to learn more about the game in order to provide better quality coaching and training. I also have to give my honest opinion about each players' potential, talent, skill, and athleticism; only harm can be done by sugarcoating and lying to players and parents. I have to tell players what they are strong at and what they are weak at, even if it might hurt some feelings. Similarly, for players, you have to be honest with yourselves about your game. Don't lie to yourself--don't cheat yourself! Being honest with yourself about your skill level will help you improve tremendous amounts.
This is straightforward, but extremely important. You can show thankfulness by respecting the game, the amount of work that basketball requires, your teammates, your parents, and your coaches. Thank your parents every time they pay for your travel leagues and training sessions. Thank your parents after every car ride. Thank your coaches after every practice and game. Cheer and support your teammates on and off the court. Thank the referees regardless of the result. Thank your teachers at school. ALWAYS be grateful for the blessings and opportunities you have.
Energy is SO contagious. Positive and negative energy can be spread so quickly and so effectively, depending on how you act. Positive energy inspires, motivates, encourages, while negative energy tears everybody around you down. Spread positive energy by being excited, being supportive, being cheerful, and by being thankful. If you have a lot of desire and a lot of passion, this will be easy for you. Spread the energy and feel the energy so that it can help you.
All of these values apply to life outside of basketball. I believe these are all critical to leading a healthy, happy, successful life. By using our basketball camps as a tool to teach and instill these important values into each player, we can help them become great men and women.
